Understanding the
RAT

Grouping Rodents / Old World Rodents (Asian and European descent)
Nicknames Barn Rat, Water Rat, Sewer Rat, Pack Rat, Brown Rat, @#$%^&*!
Best Known For Invading our space, creeping people out and at times being too smart to catch. Rats are known to invade food storage areas and hoarding things.
Life Span 1 to 3 years.
Mating Season Can be all year long if shelter and food are plentiful.
Reproductive Details After a gestation period of 21-23 days 4 to 7 young are born in a litter. Rats reach sexual maturity in 12 weeks. Breed again 4-5 days after giving birth to a litter.
Dispersal Rats are communal animals and create colonies based on whatever their food or shelter will support.
Habitat Urban, suburban, farm, industrial, commercial, and everywhere people are.
Activity Cycle Rats are extremely adaptable and active day and night.
Food and Water They are extreme opportunists and eat everything we eat, our pets eat, and our livestock eat. Something to note is that water is the rat's Achille's heel.
Habits Neophobic - stay away from new things and sudden changes in their environment; therefore, they can be slow to respond to control methods. Rats create pheromone scent trails which provide an advantage for new rat recruitment.
Damage Signs Den holes in the ground and tell tale earth piles at entrances. Holes chewed through wood and metal siding. Fecal matter in stored livestock supplies. Damaged insulation, piping and electrical wiring.
Treatment Repair entry locations, remove housing opportunities, water and food sources. Trapping and the use of liquid and solid poisons is also an efficient treatment.
Distinguishing Features Rats have long, pointed, noses and a long mostly hairless file tail. Their tails are brown and body is black/gray in color.
Diseases Rats carry many diseases that effect human and animal populations. Norway rats can carry fleas associated with the black plague.
Den Site Typically underground and under supporting structures where available. Also under slabs, woodpiles, dog houses, sheds, swimming pool walkways, decorative ponds and brush piles. Inside homes in wall, ceiling and floor voids, attics and beneath bath and shower areas. All around us and with us.
