   Gray Squirrels

Grouping Seedivore
Nicknames Gray Squirrel, Bushy Tail Squirrel, Tree Rat
Best Known For Raiding bird feeders, storing nuts, and planting the forest. Also, chewing into people's homes
Life Span 3 to 5 years.
Mating Season Spring and Summer
Litter Size 3 to 5 per litter.
Litters Per Year Two, Spring and Mid-Summer.  Early litter females may become sexually mature the same year.
Dispersal First (Spring) litters are driven away from the house; second (Summer) litters often remain with the Spring litter.
Habitat Mature trees, oak groves, hollow trees, and houses.  Houses are big hollow trees to the squirrel.
Activity Cycle Diurnal -  Active year round. Cavity nester.
Food Nuts: walnuts, pecans, acorns, maple seeds, sunflower seeds, corn.  Will also eat eggs and baby birds.
Damage Signs Holes chewed through wood, aluminum and vinyl.  Wood chips and attic insulation on the ground below their entrance hole.  Chewed electrical wires. Electrical Shorts. Water leaks. Shingles on the ground.
Treatment Trapping.  Remove trees and branches too close to the house.  Keep bird feeders away from the house.  Do not purposely feed squirrels.
